When purchasing wood pellets, you need fuel with properties suited to your plant. Delivery requirements also need to be clearly defined. The quality class, product documentation and delivery specification together provide a basis for your purchasing decision.
GLF’s published product certificate for the plant in Trzciana, Czermin, covers pine and spruce wood pellets in quality class A1 according to PN-EN ISO 17225-2:2021-10. To assess the product before purchasing, you also need information about the certificate’s status, the fuel’s properties and the current delivery.
01 / Quality class
What does A1 mean for wood pellets?
A1 is a quality class in ISO 17225-2, the standard for graded wood pellets. The class sets requirements for the raw material and the fuel’s physical and chemical properties. These include moisture content, ash content, mechanical durability, fines content, dimensions and calorific value.
For purchasers, the standard provides a common basis for specifying requirements and comparing fuels. You also need to check that the pellets meet the equipment manufacturer’s requirements.
The designation PN-EN ISO 17225-2:2021-10 in GLF’s certificate refers to the Polish national edition of the ISO standard adopted as a European standard. The Swedish equivalent is SS-EN ISO 17225-2:2021. A1 is the quality class within the standard.

Scope of the document
The certificate covers only products that have the same properties and parameters as the tested specimen and meet the stated requirements. It refers to test reports but does not provide any analysis values.

03 / Fuel properties
Which properties matter when purchasing?
Compare the documented properties with the requirements for your boiler, burner and fuel handling system.
-
Moisture content
Affects the fuel’s energy content per kilogram. Check the value and the test on which it is based.
-
Ash content
Describes the amount of ash remaining after testing. This helps you assess ash handling requirements. Compare values expressed on the same basis.
-
Mechanical durability
Describes how well the pellets withstand impact and abrasion during handling and transport.
-
Fines content
Indicates the proportion of small particles. Check which stage of the supply chain the value refers to, as handling can affect fines content.
-
Diameter and length
The dimensions need to meet the equipment’s requirements for fuel and feeding.
-
Calorific value
Check whether the figure is a net or gross calorific value, the moisture content to which it applies and the unit used.
Distinguish between three types of information
The standard’s
specified limit
A measured value
in a test report
An agreed value for the current delivery
A test result describes the material tested. Specify the agreed properties of the delivery in the order documentation.
04 / Standards and certification
The difference between A1, ENplus and DINplus
ISO 17225-2 is the standard, and A1 is one of its quality classes. GLF’s product certificate relates to a specific product. The certificate’s scope and current status need to be checked separately.
ENplus and DINplus are separate certification schemes. They have their own rules covering matters such as testing, inspection and the use of certification marks. ENplus also sets requirements for operations and handling within the supply chain.
A1 classification therefore does not automatically mean ENplus or DINplus certification. GLF’s published A1 certificate does not substantiate either of these certifications.
The product certificate for pellets should not be confused with GLF’s pallet certificates or certified management systems. Their scope differs from that of the pellet certificate. They do not replace documentation of pellet quality.
05 / Before ordering
What documentation is needed when ordering?
Make sure the quotation and order confirmation clearly identify the correct product, manufacturer and production facility. The documentation should also include:
- The agreed quality class and edition of the standard.
- A product specification with properties and tolerances.
- Relevant test reports, including dates and sample identification.
- The certificate number and current status where certification is a purchasing requirement.
- Information identifying the delivery or batch.
- The agreed packaging, quantity and delivery terms.
If you have specific requirements for raw material origin, raw material streams or additives, these requirements also need to be documented.
06 / Use and handling
Questions about use, storage and delivery
Are A1 pellets suitable for my plant?
Start with the instructions for your boiler and burner. Check the permitted fuels, dimensions and quality requirements, as well as the conditions for feeding and storage. Quality class A1 does not replace the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
How should the pellets be stored?
Protect the pellets from moisture and precipitation. Plan handling to limit unnecessary abrasion and the formation of fines. Bulk storage facilities require appropriate procedures for ventilation, access and safety. Follow the instructions for your plant and those provided by the supplier.
What needs to be confirmed before delivery?
Packaging, order volume, delivery location, unloading arrangements and delivery time need to be confirmed for the specific enquiry. Also state any restrictions on vehicle access, receipt of goods and storage space.
